Bones give your body a frame and your muscles and ligaments support this frame. The pelvic bones form a giant empty ring – without pelvic floor muscles your entire abdominal contents would just fall out of this opening! Your pelvic floor is a sling of muscles running from your pubic bone to your tailbone and they have three main jobs: supportive function, sphincteric (bowel and bladder) function, and sexual function.
They work with your abdominals, deep back, and diaphragm in a connected web of tissue. When these muscles are not working well together or have their normal activity interrupted, you may begin to experience what we call “Pelvic floor dysfunction”.
I had been experiencing pelvic pain for a decade after I suffered a traumatic fall on our honeymoon. Life continued, and even though intimate time with my husband was painful, our family grew to a beautiful family of five in just over four years. Upon getting my referral to Sarah, I was skeptical to even make that first phone call because I thought there was no hope for me to ever be able lessen my pain. (I had discussed my pain with various doctors and regular physical therapists only getting responses such as, “…there’s probably nothing you can do… that’s a tough area to heal… I’m sorry but you’ve done all you can.”) During our first phone call, Sarah gave me hope that my situation could progress for the better. And it did!
I started seeing Sarah at about 3 months postpartum due to pelvic floor pain. While getting treated for pelvic floor pain related to an episiotomy, Sarah also discovered that I had diastasis recti from my pregnancy. Within a couple months I was able to get my abdomen back to normal with a series of exercises that Sarah showed me. Also through a series of in office therapy and at home exercises, my pelvic floor pain was healed within 6 months. Sarah made me feel completely comfortable during therapy sessions as she has great people skills and is highly knowledgeable in pelvic floor rehabilitation.
I’m so glad I consulted with Sarah instead of trying to guide myself. The specific exercises she provided – especially the sequences – helped me improve quickly and on a regular basis. I would not have known about the specific exercises on my own – they were custom made! Her sensitive interpersonal skills and style are so non-judgmental and supportive. I always looked forward to our appointments. Her people skills are wonderful!
It started 7 years ago when I started to experience symptoms of what is called Prostatitis or pelvic dysfunction. For years I suffered with no resolution except for multiple trips to the doctor on a weekly basis to receive a prescription for antibiotics. In the summer of 2015 a family member of mine stumbled across Sarah’s Buffalo News Article one day. Since the first time I spoke with Sarah I had hope in controlling and hopefully suffering no symptoms. Since then 6 months have passed and I have continued to improve because of the techniques and life skills that Sarah has helped guide me to develop. I can truly say that without Sarah’s guidance and support I would still be in the vicious cycle of what is called Prostatitis.

At CorrEra Physical Therapy each session consists of one on one physical therapy services. We know that pelvic floor dysfunction is a very personal and sometimes difficult topic to discuss, thus, during your evaluation and subsequent treatment sessions every effort will be made to ensure your comfort.
During your first visit you will meet with Sarah to discuss your current symptoms and concerns. This will also include reviewing your treatment goals and any pertinent changes in your routine. In order to perform a comprehensive assessment, the evaluation will consist of a physical examination of the muscles and joints within your pelvis, back, and hips.
This may also include examination of the pelvic floor muscles. Sarah will then provide an explanation of the results of your evaluation in relation to the issues you are experiencing and review a treatment plan with a home exercise program. At the end of your session we will schedule your next appointment (if needed).
New York is a Direct Access State, which means a physical therapist can evaluate and treat a patient without a referral for 10 visits or 30 days, whichever comes first. However, at CorrEra Physical Therapy we encourage patients to have a referral from their physician by their second visit – we want to be in communication with your physician in order to provide you with the best care possible. Also, if you are seeking insurance coverage, some insurance companies require a referral before services are started to be eligible for reimbursement.

Sarah Capodagli, DPT is a licensed physical therapist. Most major medical insurance providers offer reimbursement for physical therapy services. However, please be aware that CorrEra Physical Therapy is not an in-network provider for any insurance carrier, and does not provide direct billing to insurance carriers. You will be provided with an invoice at the end of each session that you may file with your insurance or medical savings plan for out-of-network reimbursement. Call customer service on your insurance card and ask about your out-of-network coverage for physical therapy prior to your appointment. You may also download an insurance benefit worksheet (forms section) to help you ask the insurance company the right questions about your physical therapy benefits.
Following evaluation, treatment sessions are typically scheduled on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. As you progress, the frequency of your visits decreases. Each session builds on the previous and participation in your home exercise program is an essential component of your success.
Much of this is determined by the severity of your symptoms, your consistency with a home exercise program, and your ability to integrate changes into daily function. With good compliance, consistency with your follow-up appointments, and a good understanding of how to incorporate proper changes, many men and women require 6-8 sessions, spread over 2-3 months in some cases. Depending on the cause of your symptoms, this may take less or more time.
Everyone has a pelvic floor, though not everyone pays much attention to it. You are likely a candidate for conservative pelvic floor rehab if you notice symptoms affecting:
Women who are pregnant or postpartum are among a population who should have screening for prevention and treatment of dysfunction affecting the abdominals and pelvic floor.
Just because symptoms may be common, it does not mean that they need to be your “normal”. You deserve the attention to have your concerns addressed, and this is exactly what you receive at CorrEra Physical Therapy. All patients receive one-on-one evaluation and treatment during every visit.

As Dr. Francis Peabody said, “The secret to caring for a patient is to care for the patient,” and we hold this to be true for every patient.
As a doctor of physical therapy, Sarah has the skills and training to assess and treat the musculoskeletal system. With her additional training and expertise she has dedicated her practice to treating patients who are experiencing symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction in its many forms.
